What Can I Do With A Computer Science Degree?

When you think about majoring in computer science, you might assume that you will be sitting at a computer as you program and code for the rest of your life.  The good news is that if you WANT to program and code for the rest of life, you can rightfully do so. However, for those who don’t want to do that, please understand that a computer science major is a broad major. This means that you will have a wide variety of positions and careers you can choose from. The key is to explore the different areas in computer science, get some hands-on experiences, and build a skill set that can put you on track to the career path that you desire. Here are a number of options that you can start exploring as you keep getting excited about your career in the world of computer science!
The most common path is software engineering. In this field, individuals will have the opportunity to design, implement and or maintain software systems in different firms. You may also use your skills in forming a software infrastructure for commercial and government enterprises. You will need to use your communication skills if you work in teams on projects or propose new ideas.  If you are developing your own software, these communication and business skills will also come in handy as you try to market yourself, your ideas, and your company to the greater world of businesses that may need your product.
Computer Science degree graduates can work in any industry ranging from entertainment to robotics. In all these industries, you could be involved in designing the programs and computations that could result in developing games or programming a robot! You may start off programming and coding right after your bachelor’s degree; however, you will quickly notice yourself moving on to designing, coordination, planning and management of different software infrastructure and systems.
There are many ways to combine your computer science major with different subjects that could result in increasing your opportunities in the professional world. You can combine biology and computer science to pursue a career in informatics or biotechnology.  You could explore your career in cyber security or analyze cyber information policies if you added a major in forensics or political science. Majoring in finance and computer science can also help you get your feet wet in designing various financial models and simulations for various banks and investment corporations.
As you can see, there are a lot of options to explore within a computer science major. So as you start your classes in the university, feel free to stop by the career services office, by your professors’ lounge, or your seniors’ rooms so that you can brainstorm with them. Take some classes, do some internships, assist in a research project until you find the academic and career track that is the best fit for you!
