Building Your Resume

A resume is a record of your accomplishments in your professional, academic and extracurricular experiences. Think of a resume as an advertisement of yourself.  Your resume should grab the attention of the reader in a way that leads them to meet and interview you. It should demonstrate how your skills and abilities fit the requirement of the job.
Your resume should not be longer than a page. It should be concise, informational and easy to read. There isn’t a right or wrong answer to the content or the format of a resume. The impact of the resume depends on how you define your skills and abilities on paper. A point to note is to make your resume a differentiator to other resumes that flood the recruiters’ inboxes.  Be confident about what you have accomplished and make sure you use our writing skills to put together an impressive resume that reflects your confidence in your knowledge and skills.
It is never too late or too early to write a resume. I encourage you to begin the process of writing your resume by first dividing all your experiences to academic, professional, leadership, extra-curricular and volunteer categories.  You can also include workshops, conferences and competitions that you have participated in. List all your accomplishments in one document so that you don’t forget your endeavors! You can then utilize the content that best highlights your strengths and abilities to enter into your resume; the idea is to market yourself as strongly as possible! Make sure that you use strong action words when you are listing your accomplishments and experiences. You should continue updating the list and your resume with new experiences so that you will have an up-to-date resume available whenever you need it.
