Bringing University Insiders to You: A New Initiative from Gen Next Education

If you’re exploring study abroad options–for yourself or your child, it’s probable that you’re also spending a good bit of time on university websites.  And, it’s true, university websites have come a long way.  They are far more comprehensive than earlier versions, which offered broad brush strokes, at best.   Still, even the best websites cannot provide the nuanced and detailed information that a conversation with a university insider can.

That is why Gen Next Education has always worked to connect students, families and schools with university representatives in ways that foster meaningful and personal interactions.  Over the last ten years, our recruiting events have brought scores upon scores of universities from the U.S. and across the globe to hundreds of high schools throughout India and the Middle East, facilitating the kind of conversations that truly open students eyes and minds to the study abroad opportunities available to them.

Even pre-COVID, we knew this was one of our distinguishing services–along with our free, comprehensive, and unbiased advising to students and families.  But, we wanted to do more–to find additional ways for students (and other stakeholders) to access insider knowledge on a particular academic program and engage in a dialogue with a seasoned expert.  Something even the best of websites or busy virtual university fairs cannot hope to replicate.

Thus was born our newest webinar series: Exploring Undergraduate Studies.*  Delivered by knowledgeable professors, staff, and current students or alumni, and featuring popular programs of study, these sessions cover the three C’s: the curriculum (types of courses, instructional methods, etc.), the co-curriculum (research, internship, etc.), and careers/post-graduate opportunities.  Admissions representatives are also present to address questions related to admissions and funding.

Not only did I learn more about what the university had to offer, but also got to know a very interesting program, which I hadn’t known the university offered. The professor of the university gave us an insight into how life is at the university and the curriculum of the programs.

While this webinar series was conceived of pre-COVID, it could not have been more timely.

Since April, hundreds of students, parents, and counselors have participated in our webinars, exploring engineering degrees with Marian University and the University of Guelph (Canada), business with Eastern Michigan and West Virginia University, and biological sciences with the University of Baltimore-Maryland.

We will continue this series throughout the summer and into the fall, so keep an eye out for further events by following us on facebook (@gennextedu) or instagram (gennexteducation).  You can also view recordings of all past webinars here.

In the meantime, in case you’re wondering about the value of these webinars, check out a few student perspectives.

I attended the “Engineering your future” webinar with Marian University. Not only did I learn more about what the university had to offer, but also got to know a very interesting program, which I hadn’t known the university offered. The professor of the university gave us an insight into how life is at the university and the curriculum of the programs. This information is very useful while choosing universities, as it is one of the main criteria one should consider. The best part of the webinar was the Q&A session. So many questions that I hadn’t thought of popped in due to this. This allowed us to think beyond what we thought we should know. Our questions were answered with amazing passion and enthusiasm.

-Suyog Rithesh, NPS International, Mysore

The Webinar conducted on Business Courses at West Virginia University covered almost all topics regarding admissions and the various business courses offered at the university.  The overall structure had a smooth flow and established a clear understanding of the education offered at the university. There was also a detailed explanation regarding the entire admission process at West Virginia.

The Webinar also gave an insight into the campus life of the university and the various extra curriculum activities offered at the university. … And towards the end we learned about the various job offers available to students on and off campus.

Attending these webinars helped clear the common fears regarding “global education ” and solved the scary myths that prevail when it comes to global learning. It also helped me realize that global exposure is necessary and how exciting it is to study abroad and that, it is an effective way to support a holistic academic, social and emotional development.
